SHOPPING IN JAPAN

Shop Japan with a plan, not a list of stores.

Japan is one of the great shopping destinations — department store beauty floors, Japanese designers, craft and homeware, vintage and flagship stores within a few streets of each other. It is also easy to spend a precious day crossing the city for a single shop. Glow Japan plans shopping around your style, budget and route, so the time you spend in stores is the part you enjoy.

Where shopping happens in Japan

In Tokyo, Ginza gathers department stores, flagships and beauty floors; Omotesando and Aoyama are home to fashion and design houses; Harajuku is playful and youthful; Shibuya mixes everything; Daikanyama and Nakameguro are quieter, with independent shops and cafés. Kyoto is especially rewarding for craft, tea and traditional goods, and Osaka for lively shopping streets and department stores.

Our girls’ trip to Tokyo guide shows how shopping by neighbourhood keeps a day relaxed rather than rushed.

Tax-free shopping is changing

Japan offers consumption-tax exemption on eligible purchases for visitors, subject to minimum spend and other conditions. From 1 November 2026, the system moves to a refund model: visitors pay the tax-inclusive price in store and claim the refund at customs when departing Japan, with the goods and receipts. Procedures may continue to evolve, so check the Japan National Tourism Organization’s current guidance close to your trip — we include the essentials in your plan.

What we do — and what stays with you

Glow Japan researches and plans your shopping: which areas and stores suit you, in what order, and when. Shopping recommendations are part of every plan; Signature adds a personalized shopping route and Bespoke includes luxury shopping planning. We do not accompany guests while shopping, purchase on your behalf or arrange shipping, and purchases are always made directly with stores.

Questions travelers ask

Does Glow Japan go shopping with me?
No. We plan the route, the stores and the timing so the day runs smoothly; purchases are made directly by you with each store.
How does tax-free shopping work in Japan?
Eligible visitors can claim consumption-tax exemption on qualifying purchases. From 1 November 2026, you pay the tax-inclusive price and claim the refund at customs when you leave Japan. Check the latest official guidance before your trip.
Can you help me find Japanese skincare and makeup?
Yes — beauty shopping is one of our specialties. We suggest counters and stores based on your skin and preferences, and can pair shopping with a personal color session or beauty appointments.
