Planning it yourself
Japan is one of the easiest countries in the world to travel independently: safe, punctual, well signposted. If you enjoy research, have time, and are comfortable with some trial and error, self-planning can be deeply rewarding — and it costs only your time.
Where it gets harder is the layer beneath the guidebook: restaurants and salons that take reservations only in Japanese or by phone, ryokan that need careful choosing, appointments that need context to go well, and the judgement calls about pace that only experience gives you.
Travel agents and tour operators
Travel agents and tour operators typically sell trips: packaged or tailored itineraries that include accommodation, transport and often guides, with the bookings held by the company. This suits travelers who want one point of contact and one payment, and who are comfortable with the company choosing hotels within its network.
The trade-offs are less control over individual bookings and loyalty programmes, and pricing that may bundle margins into rooms and services. Quality ranges widely; the best operators are excellent.
What a travel concierge does

You book accommodation and transport directly and, where possible, pay providers at their own prices.
